The difference between potential… and what’s actually there

Apr 26, 2026

There’s a moment in dating that can feel deceptively hopeful.

You meet someone, and while things may not be fully there yet…

you can see what it could become.

You notice:

  • glimpses of emotional openness
  • moments of connection
  • signs that, with time, something could grow

And instead of focusing on what’s consistently present,

you begin relating to what’s possible.

This is where many women get pulled into something that feels promising…

but doesn’t actually move forward.

Because potential is compelling.

It gives you something to imagine.

Something to build on.

Something to believe in.

But potential is not the same as compatibility.

Compatibility is what’s already working:

  • how you communicate
  • how your lives fit together
  • how the connection naturally develops over time

Potential, on the other hand, is based on:

  • what hasn’t fully happened yet
  • what you hope will grow
  • what you believe could change

And the more you focus on potential,

the easier it becomes to stay in something longer than you should.

Not because it’s clearly right…

…but because it’s not clearly wrong.

This week’s podcast episode explores this distinction more deeply—

and why learning to recognize it can change how you move through dating entirely.
