The first man who taught you what love feels like.

Jun 21, 2026

Happy Father's Day to the dads in your life — and to those of you for whom today is complicated, I see you too.

I want to talk about something that doesn't get discussed enough in dating: the way our fathers quietly shaped what we believe love is supposed to feel like.

Not through lectures. Not through advice. Just through how they showed up — or didn't.

If your father was warm, present, and consistent, you likely learned — without ever being taught — that love feels safe. That a man's word means something. That being cared for doesn't require performing or earning it.

If your father was distant, unpredictable, or hard to reach emotionally, you may have learned something different — that love takes work, that closeness has to be chased, or that you have to shrink yourself to keep the peace.

Neither of these is your fault. You were a child, absorbing patterns long before you had the language to question them.

But here's the important part:

The blueprint you were given is not the blueprint you're stuck with.

A lot of my clients don't realize how much their dating patterns are echoes of that early relationship — until we trace it back together. The man who feels "exciting" because he's a little unavailable. The steady, reliable one who feels "boring" because reliability wasn't familiar. The anxiety that spikes the moment things go quiet, because quiet once meant something was wrong.

Once you can name where a pattern came from, it loses some of its grip on you. You stop reacting to it blindly and start choosing, on purpose, what you actually want love to feel like — regardless of what you were first shown.

So today, whatever your relationship with your father looks like, here's an invitation:

Notice what you learned. Keep what served you. And gently release what didn't.

You get to decide what love feels like from here.

Warmly,
KC
