When attraction feels like a sign — but isn't.

May 24, 2026

Here's something that doesn't get talked about enough in dating:

Strong physical attraction can make you feel certain about someone before you actually know them.

Not because you're naive. Not because you're not self-aware enough. But because of the way your brain is wired.

When attraction hits hard, your brain releases a surge of dopamine — the same chemical behind motivation, reward, and craving. Everything feels more vivid. More significant. More meant to be.

And here's where it gets tricky: your brain doesn't distinguish between intensity and meaning.

When something feels powerful, it gets coded as important. Which is why strong chemistry so easily gets mistaken for confirmation — like your body is telling you something your mind can't yet explain.

It's not. It's chemistry. And chemistry is real — but it isn't a background check.

It doesn't know if he shares your values. It doesn't know if he's actually consistent. It doesn't know if he wants what you want three years from now.

It just knows it likes the way he makes you feel in the moment.

This is what I call an attraction distortion — when the strength of what you feel quietly overrides the quality of what you're actually observing.

It shows up in small ways:

  • Excusing inconsistency because the connection feels so real
  • Filling in unknowns with positive assumptions because the pull is strong
  • Mistaking intensity for depth — when really, they're measuring two completely different things

The shift isn't learning to ignore attraction. It's learning not to let it do your discernment work for you.

Attraction gets you in the door.

What's actually there is still what you need to find out.

💬 Have you ever felt completely certain about someone — only to realize later the chemistry was doing most of the talking?
