You know your standards. So why do you keep bending them?
Sep 13, 2026I've worked with a lot of women who know exactly what they want in a relationship.
They can articulate it clearly — the values, the emotional availability, the kind of partnership they're building toward. They've done the reflection. They have the list. They know.
And then someone shows up who is interesting and attractive and almost right — and the list gets quiet.
I've been there too.
Here's something I've had to learn the hard way:
Knowing what you want and actually acting on it are two completely different skills.
Knowing is largely an intellectual exercise. You can do it alone, in a journal, in a conversation with a friend. It doesn't cost you anything in the moment.
Acting on it — holding a standard when someone compelling is sitting across from you, when the chemistry is real, when you genuinely want this to work — that requires something else entirely.
It requires being willing to disappoint someone. To walk away from potential. To choose your future self over your present feelings.
That's not easy. And pretending it is doesn't help anyone.
What I've noticed — in myself and in the women I work with — is that standards don't usually collapse all at once. They soften gradually, in small moments that each feel reasonable on their own.
He's not quite consistent — but he's been going through a lot.
He hasn't brought up the future — but it's still early.
This isn't quite what I said I wanted — but maybe I was being too rigid.
Each accommodation feels like flexibility. Like maturity. Like giving someone a fair chance.
And sometimes it is. But sometimes it's the beginning of a pattern where your standard has moved — and you're the only one who noticed.
The question worth sitting with isn't just "what do I want?"
It's "am I actually making decisions that reflect that?"
Those two things should match. When they don't — that gap is worth paying attention to.
